Facilities

Programme members will have access to an excellent suite of facilities, including:

  • Purpose-designed computer cluster rooms:

Computer terminal room equipped with PCs, graphics suite for scanning, digitizing and working with graphical software, networked B/W, colour laser printers and A0 plotter, access to digital still and video cameras and video editing suite. All our teaching rooms have wireless connectivity - RoamNet. This service is free to all UCL staff and students and allows access to UCL Network resources (e.g. Email) and the Internet.


Students use computers in a wide range of activities associated with their studies, including the preparation of course assignments, presentations using graphics and image processing software, researching using electronic Library database access and searching for information on the Internet. A range of software for wordprocessing, spreadsheets, graphics and statistical packages as well as the Earth Sciences specific software is available on the systems. Electronic mail is provided for communicating with lecturers and friends. Extensive documentation and training courses are provided by the Central Information Systems division to help students become familiar with the software packages.

  • Geographical Information Systems:

GIS software is available to students in all UCL terminal rooms through the WTS system, as well as on dedicated machines run by Earth Sciences and the Benfield UCL Hazard Research Centre.

 

Practical training in the software is offered as part of the course to illustrate the range of applications that GIS offers, with a number of internal and external staff available for assistance.

  • Libraries at UCL and elsewhere in London, including the British Library, Science Reference Library:

The UCL Libraries hold over 1.5 million volumes covering all subjects taught at UCL as well as many of UCL's research fields. About half of the stock is available on the open shelves; there are two large library buildings for arts, humanities and sciences and also a number of smaller libraries

  • High quality electron and optical microscopes and image analysers:

An extensive range of laboratory equipment is also available for use on supervised projects.
