Volcanic Activity - General Information

The ABUHRC has a particular strength in aspects of volcanic hazard and risk, with four volcanologists on the staff and a strong graduate research programme in the area. Recent and current research foci include:

  • Volcano instability and collapse
  • Eruption prediction (Project VOLCALERT)
  • Improving communication during volcanic emergencies (Project CARIB)
  • Insurance aspects of volcanic risk
  • Evaluation of volcano alert level systems
  • Volcanic vulnerability analysis
  • Restless caldera systems

Completed consultancies have addressed: claims validation following eruption of the Soufriere Hills volcano (Montserrat); volcanic risk in Indonesia, volcanic risk in the Caribbean; volcanic risk in Iceland.
